The New Wizard Oil Combination, Denver’s rockin’ a cappella group

2017 has been a busy and exciting year so far for The New Wizard Oil Combination (aka The Wizards). We are busy doing what we always do…singing our hearts out for audiences around Denver. Do you have a party you want entertainment for? Get in touch with us here. Just scroll over the Calendar link at the top of this page, then select the Contact link. You’ll find our number there. Or simply call Alan Welty our business manager at 720-938-4399. He’ll be happy to discuss our availability with you.

As usual we’ve been busy giving more concerts and learning new songs. And with all this singing, the music of the New Wizard Oil Combination keeps getting better! This Spring, we had great shows at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park on February 26, at BDT Stage in Boulder on April 24th, and a huge show in Chicago for Spring Sing on May 6th. They were all super fun and successful, and we’re now busy planning more for summer and fall! We’re available for parties and shows , so get in touch.

There are plenty of opportunities to hear us perform. Check out our schedule here for additional shows being added all the time. We look forward to seeing you!

A new CD, extra concerts, and Spring Sing in Boulder will make 2014-2015 a big season for the Wizards

Hello friends,

2014-2015 will be a great season for the Wizards. Like most years, we’ll be busy rehearsing weekly and performing concerts regularly, plus arranging and learning new songs to keep our repertoire fresh and our audiences surprised. But this fall, we’re piling on more fun. Peter Zagone, one of our stellar new 1st tenors, will be engineering our new CD. New favorites like Silver Thunderbird (featuring Michael Duran), I’ll Be There (with Doug Haley), Sleeping to Dream (Peter Zagone), Bop Till You Drop (Sam Stott) and Midnight Train to Georgia (John Farmer) will all be on the recording, plus many others.

On top of that, we expect a busier performance schedule than ever, as we start adding corporate gigs.  What all this means is, if you are planning a party anytime this fall, winter or spring and would like us to perform, please call now to book us. As fall rolls on, our calendar will fill up!

And that’s just the beginning. Our Spring Sing Planning Committee, led by Alan Welty, hasn’t really had a summer break this past year. They’ve been busy planning Spring Sing 2015, which we host in Boulder in May 2015. Spring Sing is a weekend event every year in early May in which 10-12 a cappella groups from all over the country gather (at a different city every year) for a weekend of new music, concerts, friendship and parties. It’s been happening for over 50 years! Many groups, like the Wizards, have been participating for decades, so the music is great, friendships run deep and the parties are wild! 2015 is our turn to host. Naturally, we are planning a fantastic weekend, and you are welcome to be part of it. Mark your calendars now for a day filled with great a cappella music in Boulder on May 2, 2015. It will be great!

As our public gig schedule takes shape, we’ll post them here and on our Facebook page, so revisit us here from time to time to get the latest updates. We look forward to singing for you this year!

Nothin’ but A Cappella Party, April 8th in Boulder!

Hey friends, we got a party for you! April 8th, meet us at the Boulder Dinner Theater for a “Nothin’ But Acappella Party.” That’s the plan…a night of saweeet songs sung by three of your favorite rockin’ local a cappella groups–The Buffoons, Extreme Measures, and, natch, yours truly, the New Wizard Oil Combination, aka The Wizards. Get your tickets NOW.

Of course you know the Buffoons and Extreme Measures, right?…sure you do. Two of the best student a cappella groups in the state. Heck, the universe. Well, imagine being entertained by just one of these fine groups, while you sip your cosmopolitans, check out your friends, and flirt with your date. Awesome right? Then before you can say “Wow where did these guys come from?”, another way cool group steps onto the stage to light up your night with hipper than hip harmonies. Enough already? NOOO. Because it ain’t over till we top it off with yet another helping of sugary sweet sounds from a third group. Too much? Maybe just maybe. But we think you can handle it. And no, we’re not giving away the order of the groups. Partly because we haven’t got a clue yet, but also because we want you there to hear all three.

Come on out. Get your tickets NOW. We’re gonna make it fun for you. Just bring your ears, a friend or two, and a thirst. Boulder Dinner Theater is on 55th and Arapahoe in Boulder. Call 303-449-6000 for tix. See you there!

Singing in the New Year

Oh, you’re here! Ah… Wait a minute, let us catch our breath. Phew. Okay, okay. We’re ready. What? How have we been? Well, awesome, in a word. Yes, awesome. November and December of 2013 were just silly they were so great. The Wizards were so busy, we must have broken the sound barrier, a few times over. We played 10 gigs in those final weeks, from small house parties to large conventions, singing dozens of timeless songs,  entertaining hundreds of people, and enjoying the holiday season like never before. We finished the year feeling and sounding great and having a blast.

Memorable gigs included: the annual Fruehaufs Holiday kick-off Party (at their patio furniture store in Boulder) in early November, where the atmosphere was festive, the crowd buzzin’, the food and drinks delicious, and the harmony flowed like champagne; The Denver Zoo Lights Celebration, where we entertained hundreds of CU Alums and their families with hipped up seasonal songs; The Boulder Creek Winery, where their tasty new reds and whites almost eclipsed our vintage bluesy tunes; Fairview High School, where we shared an evening with Ron Revier’s classy community chorale, Generations; and SkyLite Station in Denver (the cool Arts hang-out at 910 SantaFe Drive) where we double billed with Yale’s Mixed Company, an infectious group of talented young singers.

We hope you heard us at one of these venues, and will come hear us again soon at one of our upcoming gigs! Check in from time to time, as we add gigs regularly, sometimes on short notice. Keep singing, and Happy New Year!

Zing for Zonta!

On Sunday, March 3, 2013, we’ll return to Mt. Calvery Church in South Boulder to perform with 3-4 other a cappella groups at a wonderful concert sponsored by Zonta, the international women’s service organization. We performed there last year for the same event–an annual fundraiser for Zonta–and had a fantastic time performing before a full concert hall. We’re so glad to be invited back! Come see us and help a great organization that empowers women all over the world. The show is open to the public, starts at 2:30pm at the church, and is located west of Broadway on Table Mesa Drive in south Boulder. See you there!

Swingin’ and singin’ this Spring

It’s a busy spring for the Wizards. We have two great shows coming up in Boulder this April, followed by a concert in Mystic Conn, then more shows in May, and we’re showcasing a bunch of new songs at these gigs! We have a swingin’ new version of the Lennon & McCartney hit, “Got to Get You into my Life” arranged by John Farmer. Doug Haley penned a rockin’ version for us of the Styx classic, “Too Much Time on My Hands.” And maybe best of all, we have another gorgeous a cappella ballad by Oak Thorne — Leonard Cohen’s, “Hallelujah.” Plus new songs from the Nylons, and Sting! Phew!! We love this new music, so come out and join us on April 22, or the 29th. It’s always a fun party full of harmony!
